Creating spaces for ‘informed’ community voices, Ethiopia

Action Aid International Ethiopia (AAIE) have been working on dissemination and sharing of Information through TV, FM & community radio, respectively. Targeting the information bottlenecks which the governments – whether national or local- create and sustain, the efforts of AAIE & AAITG have been critical in enabling interface between the community and the government.

ActionAid Ethiopia engaged with 60 partners across the country, including government institutions, with a focus to work on demand: through legal literacy and legal aid, economic literacy and budget accountability, ethics and issues of corruption. As part of this effort, legal literacy and public awareness programmes were broadcasted on the local radio in northern Ethiopia, in addition to other training programmes, dissemination of legal documents and free legal support to over 2000 women. AAE extensively employed electronics media to improve public awareness and act on existing practices and related issues regarding public service provision, unethical behaviors in some public institutions, unfair treatment of women, children and people with disabilities and people living with HIV and AIDS.

Community's Voice Heard

ActionAid Ethiopia and Radio Fana (one  the local radio communitys_voicestation that has a wider coverage in the country) has initiated governance radio program which involved community dialogue forums in 2007. The programme created opportunity mainly to city populace of four major cities to meet municipal administrators and openly discussed various issues mainly related to malpractices in service provision and administrations.

The program was an exciting case in terms of creating space for communities to voice their suppressed concerns in the presence of key government officials. More than 1000 city dwellers directly participated in each forum and radioed for 21 weeks to the wide public.
